Although less serious, protections can also reduce the risk of scuff marks and carpet stains. 

In the days leading up to your residential move, follow a few simple steps to keep the floors looking their best: 

1. Take Inventory. Inspect each room to identify furniture and appliances most likely to cause damage during a move. Record their dimensions and the size of openings they’ll need to fit through. This will help you plan how to maneuver these items into the moving truck. Likewise, if possible, plan out your furniture placement in your new home ahead of time. This can help you avoid moving large, heavy items across the floor multiple times. 
2. Measure and clean. After inventorying your furniture, measure the areas of your home that require floor protection so you know how much to buy. Always buy a little more than needed to cover any gaps missed when measuring. Remember, more coverage at access points is better, as the areas with the most foot traffic tend to be messier. Once you’ve measured, deep clean your floors. This helps prevent debris from getting trapped underneath the coverings, which could damage the carpet or scratch hardwood, tile, or vinyl flooring.
3. Buy floor protection. Remember that the best materials for protecting carpets will differ from those that work best for hard floors. Choose the product that suits your type of floor, though some materials, like red rosin paper and cardboard, can work well for both. Red rosin is a thick paper that guards against light nicks and scratches, and it’s sold in rolls. Secure it with masking or painter’s tape and add a layer of corrugated cardboard in high-traffic areas. The cardboard acts as a shield that absorbs impacts and prevents scratches. 

Another option for protecting hard surfaces is protective film. The film is made of polyethylene and has an adhesive that secures it to the floor, making it resistant to tears and rips. Once you’re finished moving things, they can be removed without causing damage. Similarly, consider using plastic sheeting, drop cloths, or a moving blanket to protect your floors from dirt and damage in areas with heavy foot traffic.

Two other options for hardwood, tile, linoleum, or vinyl floors are ram/X-boards, or plywood sheets. X-board is a high-end, rollable material that is strong, reusable, and protects against spills. Plywood sheets will provide the most protection for high-traffic areas or delicate tiling. Ensure to set down a layer of red rosin paper before the plywood to prevent surface scratches.

• Because dragging causes scratches and dents, lift furniture and other items whenever possible. Sometimes protective materials rip or break. Lifting reduces the risk of that happening. 
• Lift and carry items in teams to make moving faster and easier. Ensure your team understands the importance of protecting the floors and adhering to the established plan.
• Place cardboard or protective covers around door frames to avoid scuff marks and dents.
