What To Do On Moving Day

After all the buildup and months of preparation, it’s hard to believe it’s finally here: moving day! You’ve bought all the supplies, booked Maffucci as your mover, contacted the utility companies, and closed on a new place—what else is there? Aside from packing up your vehicle and driving away, there’s a small list of things to do before you can say goodbye to your home.

To help you identify those things, Maffucci Moving has put together a list. As full-service movers with over 110 years in business, our team is specially qualified to provide a checklist of moving day essentials. For a smooth and efficient moving day, make sure everything is checked off before leaving.

The Ideal Schedule

Moving day approaches and passes by a lot faster than you realize. To ensure a smooth transition, we recommend following an ideal moving day schedule. Whatever time you’ve allocated to wrap things up before our team of movers arrives, we suggest doubling it. Keep a running list of things you don’t want to forget and any final reminders.

Here’s an example of what an ideal moving day schedule looks like:

  • Wake up early. To make sure you’re prepared for the big day ahead, wake up early. Even if you’ve packed everything and finished organizing, there’s most likely a last-minute task that needs to get done. To avoid unnecessary stress, give yourself plenty of time before the movers arrive.
  • Grab last-minute items. Even if you pack everything beforehand, there will still be a few items left. After your shower, pack any last-minute items, including those in the bathroom, and then pack up your kitchen perishables. Other items to pack last include medications, jewelry, irreplaceable family heirlooms, important documents, chargers, a box cutter, and a change of clothes. Consider discarding anything that will melt or spoil during your move.
  • Complete a look-and-clean. Before the movers arrive, do a final sweep of your home. Check every room, cabinet, closet, and storage area. As you go through each room, give everything a light cleaning. The paper towels and surface spray you’ll use for this step will also be useful before unpacking, so make sure to pack them when you’re finished.
  • Greet your movers After the final look through, greet your movers and give them a walkthrough of your house or apartment. Point out any fragile boxes or furniture that need to be disassembled. While your boxes should be clearly labeled, discuss any handling preferences you have before anything gets loaded up.
  • Moderate the move. Plan to stay around to moderate the move and answer any questions our team might have. This is the moment where you pass on the heavy lifting, literally. Feel free to ask any questions or offer suggestions! Our goal is to see you smiling and excited about this major change in your life.
  • Final sweep. Once everything is loaded onto the moving van, take one last look around your home. Leave a note with your forwarding address for mail for the new owner or building superintendent if you haven’t already done so with the Post Office. The same applies to utilities. When everything is finished, lock your door and head to your new home.
  • Head to your new place. All you need to do now is get in your car and drive! While headed to your new place, make sure to stay in touch with your movers. This way, you’ll be aware of any potential delays they face, whether they need to take a different route or just stop to refuel (both the truck and themselves). Keeping in contact is essential, as it gives you an estimated time frame for when they’ll arrive at your new home.
  • Guide the movers. Wait for the movers at your new home. When they arrive, give them a walkthrough and tell them which room each box should go into so they know where to place everything. After that, sit back, relax, and grab something to eat.
  • Check your utilities. Having hot water, electricity, and Wi-Fi ready makes your first night comfortable. When you arrive, take a moment to check these essentials and feel free to call if anything needs tweaking.
  • Unpack only the essentials. Once your movers leave, focus on unpacking only the essentials you’ll need for that evening and early the next day. This includes bathroom essentials, kitchen supplies, PJs, and an outfit for the following day. You should also unpack and hang up your curtains to help you sleep well and block out the morning light.
